Match 4 preview: Rajasthan Royals (55%) have slight edge over Delhi Daredevils (45%)

By Amar Dani On April 05, 2013

Delhi will look to restore balance after a stutter in the season opener, when they take on an inexperienced Rajasthan Royals at their home ground (Firoz shah kotla) here on Saturday.

Virendra Shewag will again miss out this match due to injury. The absence of Kevin Pieterson and Jesse Ryder was quite evident in their last match against Kolkata Knight riders. Mahela Jayawardena looked in the sublime form but it was the middle order who failed miserably after a good start provided by Mahela and Warner. The absence of the key players would hurt the chances of Delhi. Our models suggest that Rajasthan Royals have a slight edge over the depleted Delhi team. Our quantitative models put a probability of 55% on Rajasthan Royals vs 45% on Delhi Daredevils.

The decision of playing Manprit Juneja instead of experienced Venugopal Rao cost them and captain Mahela would think of undoing that in the upcoming match. The bowling looks balanced in the absence of Morne Morkel who was the holder of purple cap last year. The three spearhead likely to play Ashis Nehra, Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav, the spin department would be taken care off by Shahbaz Nadeem and Johan Botha.

Rajasthan Royals haven't made quite the impression after they crowned champion in IPL 2008, but they will look to change things this time around. The youngsters will be geared up to prove their point under the veteran Rahul Dravid. Having Shane Watson on the side can do miracles but he will be available from 2nd Match.

Royals would be hoping Ajinkya Rahane to make a statement after he smashed 560 runs last year. Dravid and Rahane looks to be the opening pair which is going to be supported by T20 specialist like Brad Hodge and Owais shah. They also have some promising domestic player in their side like Ashok Mineria, Stuart Binny and Dishant Yagnik.

With the new signing Fidel Edwards in place of Shaun Tait , Sidharth Trivedi and Sreesanth the bowling attack can boost the side. But it would be interesting to see who Dravid would choose for spin attack amongst Harmeet Singh, Sunil Badree, Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandela.

he graph above shows the relative performance index of each player that we calculated. Clearly Royals has an aggregate index slightly larger than Delhi Daredevils and looks like another close contest at our hands. If you hover over the players name, you can see the scores of each player. A higher score implies a higher importance for the player (as you might already have inferred)
