After having another season at the bottom of the points table, the Delhi Daredevils decided to yet again press the reboot button. They released many of their expensive players, and spent heavily at the
IPL auction, outspending many of their rival teams. However, spending money freely does not necessarily mean spending it wisely, and chances are that the Daredevils will again miss out on the knock-out stage of the tournament.
The team has a decent batting line-up that includes their captain JP Duminy, Yuvraj Singh, Angelo Mathews and Quinton de Kock. However, they do not having sufficient batting depth beyond that. In the bowling department, they lack a bonafide "ace" bowler, and will bank heavily on rebound seasons by Zaheer Khan, Mohammad Shami and Amit Mishra. With so much salary cap space available, it is strange that the team did not spend its money better on improving its bowling strength, which was dead last in terms of both average and economy rate last year. Their tepid bowling attack is likely to lead them to another sunk season.
Roster management: Apart from the captain JP Duminy, the other three overseas players that will most likely get chance to play on the field are fellow Proteas Quinton de Kock and Imran Tahir, and Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews. Nathan Coulter-Nile can also get a look if the team wants an edge in the fast bowling department.
Dark horse: Angelo Mathews did not play in the previous season of IPL, but was still drafted as the third-highest paid player in this year's auction. His all-round talent can certainly be a big boost for reviving the fortunes of Delhi Daredevils.
