Game review: Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Daredevils : Match 60

Starting from today, we will be a doing a new series daily on the recap of the remaining IPL games. This will be a more unconventional recap of the game, using the advanced metrics that we have developed. The recap will have the following three sections:

  1. Turning point : This will focus on the particular phase of the match which decisively swung the game int he favor of the winning team. Roughly speaking, this will corresponding to that phase which had the “maximum sustainable spike” in the win probability for the winning team.
  2. Star performer : Maybe an alternative way to state the man of the match, but we will discuss the performance of the player(s) who had the maximum win probability added in the game.
  3. Titillation index : The excitement level of the game. Roughly, the distinct number of times the win probability crosses the 0.50 line. The “crossing” criteria is somewhat subjective, but nevertheless it will give an idea of how interesting the game was.

Without further ado, here is the recap of the Kings XI Punjab vs Delhi Daredevils game.

Turning point : 11th over of the first innings. Punjab had been going on at a decent run rate of 7 an over, and Delhi skipper had sent down two good overs giving only 9 runs. In his next over, Hopes gave away twice that many to the red-hot Valthaty, who smacked him for a couple of sixes and a four, and on the way completed another 50. Win probability added in the over: 0.28.

Star performer : Piyush Chawla, 0.412 win probability added. Also got the man of the match.

Titillation index : 1. After Valthaty’s shredding of Hopes in the 11th over, there was no turning back for Kings XI Punjab. Delhi never came back into the game. Kind of not-so-exciting game.
