This is what the fans come to see in the shortest format of the game, isn’t it? How does this picture look when viewed on an over by over basis?

So why is this so? Are the grounds smaller and/or the outfields faster in the IPL? Is the bowling of better quality in the BBL? Is there an overall better quality of batsman in the IPL? It is well beyond the scope of this article to answer these questions with any degree of rigour. However we will show one more interesting view.

What if we aggregated the stats of players who have faced more than 30 deliveries in each of the recent BBL and IPL tournaments, and compared their performances in the BBL against the IPL? If the bowlers were weaker in the IPL, wouldn’t these players have better batting records in the IPL? If the grounds were smaller and/or the outfields faster in India, then again, wouldn’t the same group of batsmen have better batting records in the IPL? Let’s take a look.

The players who play in both the BBL and the IPL would absorb a fair portion of the overseas player quota. Since their records in both tournaments show no discernible difference, the difference observed when comparing the tournament statistics must be mainly due to the local players.

Again there is no solid conclusion that can be made here, but one possibility is that if there is no significant difference in the quality of the bowling or the size/pace of the grounds, is it that the quality and depth of the batting in the IPL is higher than the BBL?

The correct answer to this is probably, “who cares?”, as long as we get an exciting and eventful BBL05 starting on the 17th.
