West Indies finally show some fight

After a long time, it was good to see West Indies fighting it out in a one-day game, and make their opponent struggle, in the third one-day match against India. However, it looked anything but a fight from West Indies at the start of the match: they had lost 7 wickets by the 30th over and had not even put up a three-digit score by that time. The win probability for West Indies at that time was just 0.184.

And it was after that point that West Indies made their comeback. They lost only 1 wicket in the next 20 overs, and a quick-fire 92 from Russell (at position 10, no less) ensured that West Indies made a respectable 225 at the end of 50 overs. The score was still very much achievable for India – their second-string batting lineup notwithstanding. But West Indies gave India a taste of their own medicine, when they took out 6 wickets of India with just 92 runs on the board. The win probability of India went down as low as 0.278 by the 35th over. That was as far West Indies could go in this match. Rohit Sharma and Harbhajan Singh rescued India with a match-winning 88 run partnership for the 7th wicket, and a cameo from Praveen Kumar (who racked up 0.410 WPA for his batting performance!) ensured that India cantered home with 3 wickets in hand and 22 balls still left.

Finally, an exciting one-day match. And hopefully, West Indies will continue to show some fight in the remaining one day games, if only to make the already decided series a little bit more interesting.
