IPL2016: Fantasy Team Results

All fantasy results for every match will be updated in this post. Results will be posted for each match as well as cumulative rankings within each competition. As you could imagine I was very upbeat after the first match, but brought back to earth with a thud after the second!

Match 3, IPL2016 Kings XI Punjab v Gujarat Lions including cumulative results

You will notice in the tables below that the result for Dream 11 was out of sync with the other leagues. Dream 11 does not allow changes to be made to your squad within an hour of the match starting, while some of the other sites allow changes to be made up to the toss, which is before the final squads are announced. However in the lead up to yesterday’s match, it was announced that Sean Marsh would be unavailable due to food poisoning! This gave me the opportunity to replace Marsh in some of the competitions, but not Dream 11, where he was my nominated captain! Next time Sean, no street food before the match please.

My goal is to get the cumulative rankings within the top 30%. I have work to do to get there.

Analysis on Results to Date after Three Matches

Following are the results of some brief analysis looking at the performance of the fantasy league selections after three matches:

FL Anal

The results are obvious enough. The best performance was achieved in the first match where the fantasy team selected had:

1. The highest number of players that featured in the actual match (10 out of 11)

2. The most number of players in the top 11 actual players in the match (6 out of 11)

3. All of the top 3 players in the match

The fourth result was less expected. In all three matches, 6-7 of the top performing players in the match were also ranked in the top 11 players by the Contribution Score analysis (which was the basis of the fantasy team selection). In Match 1, all of these 6 players were also in the Fantasy team. However in Match 2, only 4 out of 6 players were selected in the Fantasy team while in match 3, only 3 out of 7 featured in the Fantasy team. Why was this? It is due to the restrictions placed on the fantasy team selection itself by the owners of the competitions. For example, in the actual match itself, up to 8 foreign players can play. However in the fantasy league, the number of foreign players may be capped at four per team, limiting the ability to select the best players in the match.

This suggests that the Contribution Score (CS) analysis does predict the top performers reasonably well, however they cannot all be included in the actual squad.

The same metrics analyzed above were also calculated using the previous Regression Based Methodology (REG) for Fantasy Team selection, and compared against the CS methodology. Refer to the table below for details:

FL Anal

The results are mixed, which again could be expected based on a sample of just 3 matches. In the first match, the CS score methodology produced the better results. In the second match, the Regression approach selected two of the top three players in the match, which was one better than the CS approach, however it also ranked one less player in the top 11 compared to CS. In match 3, the Regression methodology was superior to CS across most categories.

Two of the five fantasy leagues allow multiple teams to be selected. For those two leagues, I will submit two entries per round, one based on CS methodology and the other using REG methodology. For the remaining three leagues, I will alternate between CS and REG methodology.

Match 5, IPL2016 Kolkata Knight Riders v Mumbai Indians including cumulative results

As mentioned above, starting from this match I am trialing two fantasy teams for each of the Dream 11 and Fandromeda leagues, using both the Contribution Score methodology and the regression methodology. For the remaining three leagues, which do not allow entries for multiple teams, I will alternate between the two methodologies.

* You will notice that the Dream XI Contribution Score based team achieved a ranking of 0 out of 15 in match 37.  Because the selected teams are entered in free leagues, sometimes leagues of 1,000 players are available while sometimes only leagues of 10 or fewer players are available. In order for the cumulative results to be meaningful, the rankings are adjusted to show a ranking out of 15 players. In match 37, the Contribution Score based team ranked 2nd out of 1,000 players in the league it was entered. When adjusted to a score out of 15, it appears as 0 expressed to no decimal places. Below are the screen shots of the Team’s ranking!
